As the tragic situation in India unfolds, we wondered: what’s Earth’s oxygen worth? In Chapter 8 we look at phytoplankton. Microscopic marine organisms that make more oxygen than every tree on Earth. And climate change is decimating them. Scientists estimate it’ll cost $174.5 billion/year to save the oceans (and phytoplankton) from climate change, that’s less than 0.002% of global GDP. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but ironically that’s the Economics of Extinction.
